Our two-week
tour of Egypt started in Hurghada and it sure did leave an amazing first impression! As soon as we opened our
balcony doors of the Hilton at Hurghada resort hotel room, our splendid accommodation for the first two nights, we were greeted by a cool breeze and the stunning view of the crystal clear
Mediterranean Sea. While we were advised to be a little more conservative in our dressing in the other cities, our tour guide told us that wearing shorts, short dresses or
spaghetti strapped tees were acceptable in this part of the county because it
was filled predominantly with tourists.
As we
were travelling on a glass bottom boat to see the beautiful corals and
colourful fishes inhabiting the red sea, I was struck by a surprising
revelation; the RED SEA WAS NOT ACTUALLY RED! Before arriving at the red sea
area, I pictured the sea to be completely red in colour (I can be such a bimbo, sometimes). The tour guide later explained that it was named red sea only
because of the red corals that were present in the sea, which gave it a
reddish look. There are very few of those corals left, hence the sea’s reddish
appearance has vanished.
Towards the end of the glass bottom boat tour, a few
of us swam in the middle of the red sea. Only after the trip did I realise that
sightings of sharks are commonplace in the sea. I still shudder at the
possibility of a close encounter with a shark. Eeek!
Overall, I loved the laid back, sleepy feel that Hurghada provided during the day. Hurghada is known to be full of energy, with its various discotheques and bars opening to entertain tourists, at night. Now, that's a good reason to visit Hurghada again; got to check its nightlife out!(:
